The Red Dot Design Award is a German, internationally recognised design award. Designers and producers have been eligible to apply since 1955, and the winners are announced at an annual ceremony. It is regarded as one of the biggest design competitions in the world and one of the most esteemed honours in the design sector. The Red Dot Design Award is aimed at all those who would like to distinguish their business activities through design. The distinction is based on the principle of selection and presentation. Excellent design is selected by competent expert juries in the award categories of product design, communication design, and design concepts.

The Red Dot Label has established itself as one of the most coveted markers of excellence for good design on a global scale. The Red Dot Design Award divides into three disciplines in order to evaluate the diversity in this subject in a professional manner. Each of these disciplines has a competition once a year.

Red Dot Design Award categories

The Red Dot is awarded in three different categories:

Product Design

This award is for market-ready products manufactured industrially. Every year, the Red Dot Award: Product Design sets out to find the year’s best products. The products selected by the Red Dot Jury to win an award may be aesthetically appealing, functional, smart, or innovative, but what they all have in common is their outstanding design.

Registrations for this category can be done from 4 October 2022 until 27 January 2023 on the My Red Dot-Portal.

The Red Dot Gala will take place on 19 June 2023 at the Aalto Theatre in Essen, Germany and the after-show party in the Red Dot Design Museum.

Brands & Communication Design

This discipline is for brands and communication design. Every year, international agencies, designers, and companies take part in the Red Dot Award: Brands & Communication Design. The Red Dot Jury assesses brands and communication design works.

Companies in the manufacturing and service industries can have their integrated brand presence assessed. On the other hand, designers, agencies, and companies can choose from 18 communication design categories in which they enter their completed projects and campaigns.

The registration phase for the international competition for communication design starts in March 2023.

Design Concept

This is the award for design concepts and prototypes. The Red Dot Design Competition for design concepts keeps track of and evaluates a company’s performance in creating intriguing new design concepts throughout time. It is an indicator of an organization’s actual capacity for sustainable design innovation. It rewards these organisations and businesses for their dedication to design and encourages them to keep doing so.

The call for entries in this category begins on 1 December 2022 and ends on 21 April 2023.

The Red Dot Gala in Singapore will take place on 27 September 2023.
